Joel

I bite the inside of my cheek, trying to keep my emotions in check as I look at her.

Aaron leans down and kisses her head, then walks over to me, clapping a hand on my shoulder before walking out of the room.

Slowly, I cross the room to her bed.

“You’re here,” she whispers when I get to her.

“Of course I’m here. Where else would I be?”

“I thought maybe…”

She looks down, but I lift her chin and look into her eyes, needing her to know the truth behind these words.

“Babe, when are you going to learn I’m never letting you go?”

Her body shakes as she fights back a sob.

Without another thought, I climb into bed with her and wrap my arms around her.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’ll never be able to apologize enough. I love you. I don’t want to be without you. You’re everything to me, and I hate myself for all the ways I hurt you.”

“I need you to stop hating yourself,” I whisper, running my fingers through her hair as she fists my shirt, her body trembling against mine. “We’ll figure it all out, but we’re in it together. As long as you’re still in this with me.”

“I’m in. I promise I’m still in this. I want to fix it.”

She drags her hand up my scruffy face and looks into my eyes, then presses a soft kiss to my lips. Emotion clogs my throat as our lips meet. I need so much more than this. Pressing my lips more firmly into hers, I run my tongue over the seam of her lips. She parts for me, and I slowly glide my tongue into her mouth, kissing her ferociously, letting all the love I feel for her pour out. She needs to feel it in her soul.

Her fingers twist through my untamed beard.

“I love you,” she whispers as she pulls away. Her eyes roll over my face and she carefully touches next to my right eye. “What happened?”

“No one told you?”

“No. They all just said you’d be in soon.”

I sigh. Of course. “I was the first one to sit in here with you, but I figured Rae would want to see you too, so I was walking out to the waiting room, and I got a little dizzy… then I passed out. And landed on my face. A nurse saw, let Rae and Aaron know, and then hooked me up to an IV. I woke up a few minutes later, but the nurses made me stay until I finished the IV, which took two hours.”

Her hand goes to her mouth. “Joel…”

“I guess you weren’t the only one not taking care of yourself.”

“Because you were too busy trying to take care of me and deal with the trauma I put you through.” She sweeps her hand over my face. “I’m so sorry.”

“Stop apologizing.”

“No. I fucked this up. I’m fucked up.”

“No, you’re not,” I growl. “You’re beautiful and smart and strong and capable. You’re just struggling right now. You can’t handle everything on your own.
